One of a series of waterfalls at Dynjandi in the Westfjords, (the biggest of which is very big indeed). A nice place to visit in a quiet part of the country.

Nice waterfalls. Did you get the Hraunfossar, near Reykholdt? [link]

It's not your traditional waterfall (no river feeding it) ; it's a set of springs that are almost one km long that tumble down rocks.

Thanks! Yes, we did go to Hraunfossar; it's unique all right. Almost has the look of Dynjandi, but is still different. I don't think I got any exceptional photos from the area, but it was a nice place to visit. The country could have been called Fossland instead of Iceland.

I would have liked to keep the first name given to the country which was Snæland, 'Snowland', it sounds so fairy tale-ish :D Anyway, great picture :)

When was it changed to Iceland? I like Snaeland too, but the "æ" would be annoying to type for a lot of people. I personally love that character but I'm weird. :p

But it would just be translated to Snowland, like Ísland is translated to Iceland :P

The story goes that the first visitor (not a settler), Naddoddur, came from the Faroese Islands and called the land Snowland, then later another, Garðar from Sweden, came and named it Garðar's Island (egotisical much!) and then finally there was Hrafna-Flóki who was a Norwegian viking came and tried to stay over winter but it was so cold that all his sheep died and he got pissed off and left in a huff and harshly named the land Iceland. Mean guy.

Right, right, yes of course.

Why is it always foreigners who name the place? :(

Because they're control freaks ...or there's no one there to do it in the first place
But it's not always bad. The one who named Greenland 'Greenland' was pretty clever and the one who named some part of N-America Wineland (stupid Columbus for changing that!).
